Our Training

As the only initial teacher training (ITT) provider in Calderdale, we offer a range of school-based routes into Primary and Secondary teaching. We serve the West Yorkshire region with school partners in Leeds, Bradford, Huddersfield and Halifax.
We plan our training to reflect the best research evidence on the most effective ways of teaching and learning for children and young people. Our rigorous programme is based entirely in schools, starting in a classroom from day one, and includes training days taught by a specialist team of staff including classroom teachers, school leaders, SENDCos and specialist leaders.

On completion of our programme our trainees achieve Qualified Teacher Status and a PGCE from the University of Huddersfield.

SCITT vs. University: What’s the Difference?

Choosing the right teacher training route is an important decision. While both university-based and SCITT (School-Centred Initial Teacher Training) routes lead to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), a SCITT programme offers a more immersive, school-based experience, ensuring you feel confident and classroom-ready from day one.
  • School-based Learning – Like university courses, we have a structured taught programme, but instead of being campus-based, our training takes place in schools one day per week throughout the year. This means you’ll constantly apply what you learn in a real classroom setting.
  • Taught by Experts – Our programmes are delivered by practising teachers and school leaders who are experts in their fields, giving you direct insight into the latest teaching strategies and best practices.
  • More Time in Schools – Unlike university routes, where school placements happen in blocks, SCITT trainees spend the entire year immersed in school life. You’ll gain extensive hands-on experience in at least two schools, preparing you for the realities of teaching.
  • Flexible and Responsive – Our training is tailored to each cohort’s needs. We can quickly adapt timetables, add extra support sessions, and personalise elements of the programme to ensure you receive the best possible training experience.
Despite these differences, SCITT programmes offer the same high standards and qualifications as university routes:
  • Recognised Qualifications – Our trainees achieve QTS, just like university-based trainees, and we also offer a PGCE as part of our programme.
  • Structured Training – We provide weekly core training sessions, similar to university courses, to ensure a strong foundation in teaching theory and practice.
  • Gradual Teaching Responsibility – You won’t be expected to teach a full timetable in your first week. We build up your classroom experience gradually, boosting your confidence and skills throughout the year.
  • Ongoing Support – Every trainee has a dedicated school-based mentor who meets with them weekly, along with SCITT staff who also provide personalised guidance and support.
  • Identical Fees & Funding – Tuition fees and financial support are the same whether you train with a SCITT or at university.
By choosing a SCITT route, you’ll benefit from a more hands-on, personalised training experience while gaining the same qualifications as a university-based trainee. If you want to learn by doing, surrounded by expert teachers from the start, a SCITT is the ideal choice.

Supporting our trainees

High quality, supportive school placements
As a SCITT, we believe the next generation of teachers deserves exceptional support to help them succeed. That’s why we place just as much value on pastoral care as we do on high-quality training. Our partner schools, tutors, and mentors share this commitment, dedicating their time and expertise to guiding trainees throughout their placements.
With personalised support and expert coaching, we ensure our trainees not only meet but exceed expectations, developing the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to thrive in the classroom.
